After a bit of a late start (10:30am) we got the event going smoothly and quickly. Only 38 drivers showed up for our first event at Gulf Island Water Park in Gulfport, Mississippi, but we all had a great time anyway. A few organizational snafus are expected at any new site, especially one when we leave the Delta equipment trailer back in New Orleans. Still, we managed seven runs at a smooth pace with minimum disruption. The Water Park people are simply awesome to deal with and very helpful.
The course was smooth, flowing, and full of visual tricks that made it more than the simple desiogn would seem. Navigation was easy, but deceptive, as fast times required going slow where it looks like you should go fast, and going fast in areas that looked slow. Sparse cone placement meant that drivers had plenty of room to recover without scoring a DNF. Course conditions stayed dry all day, but the presence of sand and gravel made it a challenge to get through quickly and cleanly.
Overall, a great first event at a new site, and there’s a ton of potential in the site and driver base. Here are the Class Results, Raw Results and PAX Results.
And for those who stuck around for a special King Of The Hill Showdown, here are those results. Special thanks to Ed for letting us beat his Jr. Kart around.
