Delta is inviting members of various media outlets in the surrounding New Orleans area to compete in our event on March 8th at Zephyr Stadium. We will be holding a special competition to find out who is the fastest journalist in our area. Will it be a perky weatherperson or our favorite morning DJ? We are inviting both male and female participants from each organization. A champion for both male and female drivers will be crowned!
Participants will have the opportunity to experience cars from Lotus , Audi, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, and other great sports cars! Journalists will be teamed with an experienced Delta Coach. Each Delta Coach will have their times added together with the times from their fellow journalist team members. At the conclusion of the event the team with the combined fastest time will be awarded the team trophy. Trophies will also be given out to the fastest MALE and FEMALE journalist allowing for some serious bragging rights in our area!
Participants will be competing in SOLO also known as “autocross”. Autocross is a form of motorsports that emphasizes safe, low-cost competition and active participation. An autocross is a timed competition where drivers navigate one at a time through a temporary course marked by traffic cones, rather than racing on a track with multiple other cars, as in road racing or oval racing. Autocross tends to place more emphasis on car handling and driver skill than on sheer horsepower, and events typically have many classes which allow almost any vehicle, from economy sedans to purpose-built vehicles, to compete. Speeds are slower in absolute terms when compared to other forms of motorsports, usually not exceeding highway speeds, but the activity level is high due to a large number of elements packed into each course. Autocross courses are typically 40 to 70seconds in length. Autocrossing is a good way to learn skills that make every day driving safer, as drivers learn vehicle control in a safe, controlled, and competitive environment.
It is strongly encouraged that participants provide their own car for competition. Delta members will make their own vehicles available to members of the media at their own discretion. If you would like to co-drive a Delta members’ car please RSVP so we can make arrangements ahead of time. Participants must be familiar with a manual transmission and demonstrate an attitude towards safety at all times.
Delta is an all volunteer chapter of the SCCA (www.scca.org) and is working hard to get membership and participation levels back to pre-Katrina levels. We hope that inviting the media to a friendly competition will help get the word out that our club is back and running strong in 2008. Delta has been in New Orleans for over 50 years and with your help there will be many more!
Please contact Delta using the information above so that we can plan for your participation. We ask that you RSVP no later than Feb 29th. If you are unable to participate we would appreciate any announcement that you can make about our upcoming event. For event details please click
