Event Report:
The day started off slow as we had to design the course around three huge mounds of dirt strategically placed where our finish normally is. With Benson Young and Justin Victor on the job, a safe, fast, and exciting course was laid out in plenty of time. With a quick driver’s meeting and novice walk through, the racing began – well, almost. The tire burning was delayed by some dead batteries at the start. A few Energizer bunnies later and the fun began.
The focus of the day was on the Miatas. Much smack talk had been laid down and it was time to see who truly was fastest and who would wear the “pink thong of shame”. After six runs and additional smack talk amid each run, Tony Shepard took the crown with a FTD-winning run of 38.679. Eric Trigg took top honors in CSP with his 38.825, Marc Evangelista took the only ES trophy in his white 96, while Brad Guillot won SM2 honors with a 42.139. Unfortunately for him – Brett Guarino took home the “pink thong of shame” with his not-so-blazingly fast run of 43.926. This “record” will be forever tainted by the * stating (not his car, first time in a Miata, faster than a few girls) Other honorable mentions were Sparkie Spell in her 90 CSP Miata coming in with a 45.744 and Brett Mount taking DS honors in his 08 MazdaSpeed 3 with a 40.858.
While this was supposed to be a Mazda-focused event, the 350Z showed up in full force! Fastest 350 of the day was Rob Evens in his BS 350Z putting down a 41.056, followed by Dustin Hamilton in his BSP 350Z with a 42.904.
As usual, the Wetzels drove in from Florida and conducting instruction on the proper way to drive a car. Jeff took 2nd in PAX with a 38.423 with Roberta only two spots behind with her 39.181. Amazing driving from two of the nicest people in autocross.
All in all another great event for Delta. 68 drivers, plenty of hot dogs and hamburgers, great weather, great friends, who could ask for more?
